The population of Roatan in 2013 was 41,831 with an expected growth rate of 30% by 2020. Approximately 53% of the population is rural, and it is estimated that 75% of the rural population lives below the poverty line, unable to meet basic needs. 

The area of Punta Caliente is located in a shallow bay or bight along Roatán’s eastern coastline. It is a settlement of several hundred people living in homes that consist of single parent families with multiple children or widows. Most do not have enough food, clean water, electricity, plumbing, gas, or the basic necessities of life.
